October 3rd, 2004: Hawks 4 Dynamos 2
The Hawks took the pitch on Sunday, October 3rd looking to make a statement against a Dynamos team that had beaten the Hawks 4-2 in the last matchup against the two squads. The Hawks had failed to beat the Dynamos in league play since the Fall of 2002 and a strong result was long overdue. Based on superlative performances by a talented group, the Hawks were able to brush off an undeserved red card and hand the Dynamos a convincing 4-2 defeat.

The Hawks began the game with a torrid pace, building up a 3-0 lead by the 30 minute mark. The Dynamos simply did not have an answer for the superior interplay between the Hawks. The first goal came in the 10th minute off an indirect free kick which Alan Golden hammered home with a scorching laser of a shot from about 18 yards out. Beautiful, beautiful goal. The second goal was earned off a penalty kick earned by a Dynamos handball in the box. Outside middie Alex Brown's penalty effort was stopped by the Dynamos keeper, but Geof Thompson was able to hammer home the ricochet in convincing fashion for a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute. The Hawks struck again in the 30th minute off another fantastic effort by Alan Golden, who was able to shake the last Dynamos defender and take off for a one vs. one breakaway against the Dynamos keeper, slotting it with ease for a 3-0 margin. A fantastic three goal explosion to start the game, won off of great team passing and individual skill.

The game took a different turn shortly thereafter when two yellow cards were handed out to defender Jon Knight after only five minutes on the pitch. Down a man for the rest of the game, the Hawks' momentum was mitigated by the circumstance of being a man down. Halftime score, Hawks 3 - Dynamos - 0. In the second half, the Hawks threatened effectively for large portions of time and effectively kept the Dynamos at bay despite their man advantage. The Dynamos were, however, exploiting the advantage to some extent and were finally able to find the net off a fantastic one time volley at the top of the box off a driven cross in the 65th minute. Shortly thereafter, the Hawks were able to maintain the three goal margin when striker Irving Williams defied his age with a run to space and was able to beat his man to the ball, round the Dynamos keeper, and slot home a goal in the 70th minute. The rest of the second half was fairly balanced, but Dynamos was able to score another a few seconds before time off a driven low shot that found it's way through a sea of defenders and into the Hawks net.

All in all, a solid victory against a top opponent in the WPL. Alan Golden gets the game MVP for a another fantastic peformance and Geof Thompson gets the honorable mention for being a terror all game long. Everyone played well and a team effort was certainly enjoyed by all on the pitch. The Hawks were able to record the victory in front of team co-founder Tom Karygiannis who walked away extremely pleased to see his legacy of excellence fully embodied in the Aegean Hawks of today. The team has a bye week on the 10th and will return to the pitch against the always unpredictable Village Settlements in an 11 AM game on Sunday, Oct. 17th.
