Aegean Hawks F.C.

May 21st, 2005: Hawks - 1 vs. LCC Intl - 1
A spectacularly clear and sunny Spring day unfurled after days of rain for a Saturday 11 AM Hawks matchup with WPL standout LCC International on May 21st. The Hawks had lost to LCC 0-5 in the previous meeting between the two clubs in an embarassing performance with a depleted squad. A stronger Aegean Hawks side was eager to take advantage and wipe away the memory of the previous drubbing - at least prior to the game. Unfortunately, the Hawks were disorganized and unprepared for the matchup. In a disturbing new trend, the Hawks were forced to play a man down for the first 25 minutes of the first half.

To the game, the man-down Hawks created some great chances in the opening twenty minutes of the game. Todd Leber, Alan Golden, Jon Knight and Geoff Thompson each had good scoring opportunities, but could not find the back of the net. The Hawks makeshift backline of Jon Knight, Yuri Sudhakar, John Stephens, and Alex Peacher stepped up to their new assignments, but were tested in the game by good interplay amongst the LCC midfield, who created good chances for their teammates. The game was somewhat of a midfield battle and full of counter attacks by both teams. Both teams had ample opportunities to score, but finishing was off on the day. LCC hit the cross-bar twice, once off a long blast and another off a short blast. The Hawks had more good opportunities to score but were unrewarded for their efforts. LCC took the lead in the 65th minute when a forward took off on a breakaway and awkwardly rolled the ball past keeper Anthony Peters. The Hawks answered back immediately off a nice combination play from Alan Golden, Jon Knight, and Todd Leber. Todd Leber took the feed from Jon Knight for a one-time low, driven cross across the LCC box, which defender Alex Peacher was able to deftly flick onto Will Phouminh for a short volley tap in goal. Game tied up 1-1. The rest of the game saw both teams with several more chances to score, but unable to convert. Anthony Peters made some truly remarkable saves and kept the Hawks inefficiency up top from coming back to haunt us. All in all, a draw was a fair result for the play on the field, but disappointing nontheless for the disorganization prior to kickoff and the poor finishing. The Hawks face 3rd place Quilmes on the following day and hope for a better display.
