2007:Washington Premier League Match
Aegean Hawks FC - 3 vs. Glover Park/La U - 2 The Hawks took a break from Cup play to face second place Glover Park in a WPL matchup on Sunday night at Wakefield High School in Arlington. Glover Park provided more resistance than the Hawks bargained for and made a game of it. A lackluster performance by a depleted Aegean side which was missing several regulars still resulted in a 3-2 win off the boot of game MVP , midfielder Alex Nydal.
The Hawks struck first in the 20th minute when a nice dummy by forward Dre Nydal found the foot of left winger Alan Golden, whose turn and pass found the foot of striker John Stephens for a booming near-post blast from the edge of the box that left the La U keeper with no chance. Glover took the game to the Hawks and pulled off two goals within 15 minutes - capitalizing on the Hawks' defensive apathy to take the lead. The Hawks equaled just before halftime on a sequence in the Glover Park box that finished with midfielder Alex Nydal slotting home the equalizer. The second half was a tug of war where the Hawks earned many chances that did not fall and saw Glover threatening often in their own right. The game winner came in the 75th when a laser-driven pass back to the keeper from Glover Park's defender resulted in a poor first touch and a 50-50 opportunity for outside midfieder Alex Nydal. His sliding tackle provided the backboard necessary to send the Glover keeper's clearance attempt straight back into his own goal with force. Winning ugly is better than losing pretty.
With the win, the Aegean Hawks have captured the WPL league title for the third straight season with two games still left to play. The Aegean side will concentrate the rest of the week on preparations for it's historic June 12th matchup against the Harrisburg City Islanders in the first round of the US Open Cup.
