2009:Arlington Premier Soccer League
Aegean Hawks FC - 5 vs. World Bank - 2 (Arlington, VA - 9:00 PM, Gunston Middle School) The Hawks faced World Bank late Thursday evening in a rematch of the 1/18/2009 MDCVSA Open Cup semifinals which saw the Hawks come out victorious in OT by a score of 3-1. With many players unavailable for the Hawks, the team's depth was sure to be tested against a solid side with an axe to grind and excited to exact revenge.
The game was a tight affair for most of the game, with blustery conditions making anything but a crisp, ground passing game a difficult prospect. World Bank took the lead off a penalty kick in the 30th minute. The Hawks equalized off a nice effort by Matt Ney just before the half. The Hawks went up 2-1 off another Matt Ney goal in the 48th, only to have WB equalize minutes later in a scramble in the Hawks penalty area. The Hawks were able to ride the fine performance of Matt Ney in the remainder of the half to deflect World Bank's revenge effort with a 5-2 victory.
The Aegean Hawks will play it's final APSL regular season match on Valentine's Day in a high noon encounter with Natural Mystic. Regardless of the outcome, the Hawks have captured the #1 seed and have qualified for the APSL playoffs on February 21st.
