2008:Terrill Cup Semi-finals
Aegean Hawks FC - 4 vs. Raiders FC (WISL) - 1 (Potomac, MD - 11 am - Bretton Woods Country Club)
The Aegean side set its sights on a Terrill Cup semifinal clash with WISL upstarts, Raiders FC, a talented team that is very much on the rise and was sure to provide a tough test. Several Hawks players also play on the Raiders, and when the teams met on Sunday afternoon at Bretton Woods, bragging rights were at stake. In a hard-fought match, the Hawks were able to pull away for a convincing 4-1 win and a berth in the Terrill Cup Finals for the second time in club history.
The Hawks got on board first off a nice strike from 20 yards by holding middie Mike Goldman that sizzled past the Raiders netminder. The game stayed 1-0 with Hawks enjoying the majority of the possession, but Raiders threatening the Aegean goal on several occasions. After halftime, the Hawks struck quickly when a scramble in the box saw center back John Stephens put one in from point blank range and increased the margin to 2-0. The Raiders answered right back with a nice header by Alex Nydal off a corner for the 2-1 game. Carlos Garcia put the Hawks up 3-1 off a bizarre header that looped in the high in the air and into the Raiders goal much to the chagrin of the Raiders keeper who easily should have saved it. The Hawks left no question in the 80th when striker Anders Kelto's cross was met by Mike Goldman at the far post for the crisp header finish and the final scoreline.
The squad will now face WPL rivals Reds United in the Terrill Cup finals. The Reds finished just a point behind the Hawks in WPL league play this year, and the final will be sure to be a competitive affair. It is unclear whether the match will be played at Bretton Woods or at RFK stadium prior to a DC United match.
