2009:Washington Premier League Regular Season Hawks and Atletico VA Tie in League Derby Match Teams Exchange Second Half Goals, Set Up Fierce Finish to Fall 2009 WPL Campaign (Fairfax, VA- Fairfax High School, 6:30 PM)
The Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC clashed with Atletico VA in a WPL league match on Sunday evening that held big implications for the Fall 2009 WPL title race. Atletico topped the league at 6-1 coming into the match, with the Hawks and Reds lurking games in hand. The Hawks entered the match as the lone team with a perfect record, but Atletico were sure to provide a stiff test.
In a match that will likely be replayed with larger issues at stake in the USASA National Cups DC/VA qualification phases, the Hawks and Atletico traded second half goals to split points on the evening. The first half was lackluster from both sides, but events turned interesting at the beginning of the second half. Atletico pounced on a Hawks mistake in the 46th minute off a free kick that could not be claimed by Hawks netminder, Nick Carlin-Voigt. The goal seemed to wake the sleeping Hawks into action, and the Aegean side began to press things progressively as the second half wore on. Their efforts finally bore fruit in the 70th minute off a glorious long ball into the penalty area by midfielder Adam Gracia that was struck home with authority by Hawks captain Watson Prather.
The Hawks had several chances to increase their lead, most notably when Erwin Diaz's cross was pawed away by Atletico's keeper into the path of Hawks striker Ricky Schramm, but his attempt at the open net sailed miraculously high from just 6 yards away. Atletico threatened several times to take the game winner, but their most dangerous buildup was mitigated by a hastened shot that was easily corralled by Carlin-Voigt. The Hawks next take to the field on the indoor surface on November 7-8th in the Copa DC IX indoor tournament at the Rockville Sportsplex. WPL outdoor action will resume on the evening of November 15th and the Hawks willl need to win out in order to have clear claim over their 8th consecutive WPL title.
