2009: La Super Copa - First Round
Aegean Hawks FC - 3 vs. Espanyol - 0
Hawks Dispatch Espanyol, Draw La Chapin in Super Copa Quarters
(Washington, DC - 12:00 PM, RFK Auxiliary Turf Field)
The Hawks took the pitch for their first match in three weeks in a first round DC Super Copa matchup with Espanyol, champions of the Springfield International League. The Easter weekend tie found the Hawks again scrambling to field a capable roster, but 13 players were ultimately suited for the 12 pm kickoff on a wet Spring day. The Hawks donned their all orange kits provided by tournament sponsors, Volkswaggen. In a match where the Hawks showed some rust after a long break from field action, the team grew momentum throughout to pump in 3 second-half goals and maintain a clean sheet to advance to the Quarterfinals vs. perennial El Salvadoran outfit, La Chapin.
The Aegeans kicked off the match at RFK's Auxiliary turf pitch eager to get off to a winning start in the single elimination affair. In the first half, the Hawks flexed their possession muscles while their opponents surprised with a dangerous attack orchestrated by a triumverate in the midfield and a crafty striker. With the Hawks enjoying a majority of the posession but Espanyol able to craft some attacks of their own, neither team was able to muster solid chances in the first stanza.
At halftime, some adjustments were made and the Hawks began to clamp down on their opponents. The first Hawks goal was scored in the 50th minute on a Watson Prather entry pass to striker Corey curnutte, whose deft chip over an oncoming challenge sent him onto goal for the one-vs-one conversion. In the 65' minute, the Hawks found themselves up 2-0 after a driven cross from outside left back Titou Fierro found it's way onto the foot of striker Erwin Diaz and banged into the net from close range. With the Hawks defense getting stronger as the match went on, the Hawks offensive unit put their final stamp on the match in the 80th minute, when attacking center mid Watson Prather was given space at the top of the box to unleash a well placed sizzler to the left corner and notch the Hawks finaly tally.
All in all, a decent result for the squad against a game opponent. Next weekend will require more Hawks to join in the fray, as a Super Copa clash with La Chapin (Saturday) and WPL league match (Sun) await.
Nick Carlin-Voigt, John Stephens, Corey Curnutte, Eddie Thurston, Titou Fierro, Nate Adams (Marcos Araus '75), Mike Goldman, Watson Prather, Alex Nydal, Erwin Diaz, Andreas Nydal (Jon Knight '45)
