2009: Washington Premier League
Aegean Hawks FC - 2 vs. Atletico Virginia - 1
Hawks Deflect CAV Challenge Off the Back of Two Thundering Nate Adams Volleys
(Arlington, VA - 6:45 PM, Wakefield High School Stadium)
The Hawks took a break from their National Cup campaign this Sunday for their second WPL match of the season against league rivals, Atletico Virginia. The match would serve as the first contest between the two sides since the Hawks victory over CAV in the DC/VA Finals of the Open Cup on January 25th, 2009. Atletico have been the biggest threat to the Hawks dominance in DC/VA over the last year, with the majority of their roster less than a couple years removed from NCAA Division 1 programs. Given the derby and the recent history, the match was sure to be a competitive affair. In a tense contest that sparkled with the competitive energy of a title game, the Hawks were able to remain undefeated against their league rivals and collect the victory on the back of two spectacular goals from WVU-bound outside midfielder, Nate Adams.
The Hawks opened up the scoring in the 25th minute when outside back and ex-VCU Ram Kubiak Valverde delivered a driven diagonal ball to the far top of the Atletico VA box. The ball was met by outside midfielder Nate Adams about 20 yards from goal, whose poised chest trap and subsequent full volley thundered past the outstrechted arms of the CAV keeper in an exquisite finish. Atletico was dangerous on the counter attack and set pieces throughout the match, and were able to notch the equalizer at the 35' mark in opportunisitic fashion off a botched clearance and melee in the Hawks penalty area that saw the ball squirt out to a streaking CAV forward for an easy conversion.
At halftime, a tactical adjustment saw the Hawks enjoy the majority of posession and chances in the second stanza, but Atletico remained dangerous on the counter and set pieces, thanks in no small part to their ability to turn each throw-in into a goal scoring opportunity. The Hawks looked to be going out in front in the 70th minute, when American University product Luis Martinez's cross was delivered perfectly to former Red Bull and Georgetown alum Ricky Schramm, but his skim header fell just shy of the post. Just as the game looked to be headed for a hard fought draw, a fine combination play and Watson Prather strike was deflected with pace and onto the path of Nate Adams. His scorching half volley from 20 yards sizzled past a wall of CAV defenders and smacked under the upper 90 to give the Hawks the lead in the 80th off a world-class finish. His touch would prove the decider as the remainder of the match saw Atletico pressing hard for the equalizer, but the Hawks able to hold on for the important derby victory.
Next up for the Hawks is a Tuesday friendly with PDL side, the Fredericksburg Gunners. The match will serve as the final tuneup for the Hawks prior to a Memorial Weekend clash vs. Charm City FC of the NPSL and the opportunity to return to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the second time in three years.
