Hawks Split WPL Ties, Prepare for Amateur Cup Clash with Charm City FC
Fall to La Universitario/ABGC in See-Saw Sunday Match, Get Back to Winning Ways on Thursday vs. Fados Conquistadores
(Sun - 8:30 PM - Fairfax, VA - Fairfax High School)
Thurs - 9:30 PM - Falls Church, VA - George Mason High School)
The Dulles Sporsplex Aegean Hawks turned their attention back to WPL league play after an exhausting weekend of Cup play on May 2nd- 3rd. On Sunday, the Hawks faced ABGC/La Universitario at Fairfax High School. La U, keen on paying the Hawks back for bouncing them out of the Amateur Cup, were sure to provide a stiff challenge. Unfortunately for the Hawks, an emotional hangover from the previous week seemed to hinder the desire to compete in a league fixture and a see-saw match ensued which saw La U come out on top of the Hawks in a 5-4 shootout. It was surely a satisfying win for La U against a Hawks side that were not focused to play from the start. Whether it was players showing up at kickoff or uncharacteristic immaturity of play or the inability to finish chances, the result was a 0-2 deficit within 15 minutes and a street ball festival marked by individualism and poor team defense on both sides. Halftime score was 2-0 in favor of La U, and the Hawks would close and challenge in the second half before poor defense reared its head again. Goldman scored one early in the second half to make it 1-2, then La U score a third on a beautiful chip from the wing off a give and go that found the upper 90. Schramm brought it back to 3-2 and Diaz tied it up at 3 in the 80th before a soft pass back to the keeper was intercepted for La U's fourth of the match. Mcmorris evened the game up for the Hawks in the 86th with a nice header off a corner, but La U scored a header of their own at the death of the match to get their first victory over the Hawks since the Spring of 2004.
On Thursday evening, the Hawks looked to right the ship against a talented Fados Conquistadores side that had dominated La U 5-1 just a week earlier and had put together an undefeated season leading up to the match. The Hawks were eager to show the rest of the WPL that the quest for a 9th consecutive league title would not be taken lightly. Importantly, the Hawks needed to get their mojo back before a Region I Amateur Cup battle against MD qualifiers, Charm City FC on Sunday. In a focused team performance, the Hawks shut out Fados explosive offense and rattled off three goals of their own for a solid victory that accomplished both objectives. Ricky Schramm started the scoring off a beautiful run and pass over the defense by Hawks center mid and team captain Michael Goldman in the 25'. The Hawks struck again before halftime when outside midfielder Erwin Diaz got sent in wide on the counter and slotted a cross into playmaker Watson Prather for a 2-0 lead that would stand until halftime. Fados put the pressure on in the second half, but it was the Hawks that scored the lone goal of the second stanza off a PK that was converted by Goldman for the final 3-0 scoreline. The Hawks next turn their attention to defending their 2009 National Amateur Cup title in Sunday's Amateur Cup fixture vs. Charm City FC, a proven team that has always provided stiff competition. Sunday's match will kick off at 3 PM at Bovegna Field in Baltimore, with the winner claiming a stake in the Region I semifinals.
