Hawks End Charm City FC's Amateur Cup Hopes
Advance to Region I Semifinals with 2-0 Away Win; Will Take on German-American Kickers of NJ at Home on June 6th for berth in Regional Final
(Sun - 3:00 PM - Baltimore, MD - Bovegna Field)
The Dulles Sporsplex Aegean Hawks turned their attention to defense of their 2009 Amateur Cup title on Sunday with an away Region I quarterfinal match vs. familiar foes Charm City FC of Baltimore. Now tasked with the simplified focus of repeating last year's achievement, the Hawks rode into Baltimore fully cognizant that nothing short of a gutty effort would propel them closer to their goal. Arriving at the pitch, the latter point was further affirmed by the rocky surface that was sure to result in a more direct approach for both teams.
As play began, it was the Hawks that adjusted quicker to the conditions and struck first in the 23' minute off an exquisite overhead scissorkick volley from 10 yards by center back Karsten Smith that left player/coach Jon Knight woeful that he didn't have someone taping the match. Charm City was always dangerous and both teams defense played key roles in the match with plenty of blocked shots and physical play to keep the outcome far from certain. However, it was the Hawks who struck again in the 42' when striker Ricky Schramm poked in a rebound off his own attempt for the 2-0 scoreline.
In the second half, both teams threatened but a gritty effort by both defenses left the final scoreline 2-0 in favor of the defending national champs. With the victory, the Hawks have advanced to the Region I Semifinals of the Amateur Cup, and will face the German-American Kickers of New Jersey, who downed Baltimore Bays Chelsea in OT 4-2. The match will be a home fixture for the Hawks and will be played at the MD Soccerplex. In between now and that time, the Hawks will have a couple WPL fixtures and a Memorial Day run in the Copa Taca latino tournament.
