2013: US Open Cup - DC/VA Final
Hawks Defeat Hammers FC to Capture DC/VA Open Cup Crown
Dos Anjos 25' Strike the Difference; Hawks play MD Champs on April 7th Away in Region 1 Quarterfinal Match
(Robinson Secondary School Stadium - Fairfax, VA)
On a bone-chilling winter day, the Hawks struggled to find the back of the net, but settled for a 1-0 victory against the Hammers FC of the NVSL to collect their 6th DC/VA Open Cup crown in the last 8 years. The match, played at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, VA, started well for the Hawks who enjoyed significant possession in the opening 30 minutes. The Aegean side were able to capitalize in the 25th minute of action with a fine goal by striker Mateus Dos Anjos, who collected a pass from fellow stiker David Rosenbaum, turned a defender, and laced a left footed blast across the goal mouth and to the far side netting from the top of the box. The Hawks enjoyed several other chances to score in the opening stanza, but the howling winds and a resolute Hammers defense provided stiff opposition. Veteran outside middie Erwin Diaz looked to be putting the Hawks up by two when he sailed in alone behind the defense, but his attempt to chip the Hammers goalkeeper in the 35th minute was deftly collected. In the last 15 minutes of the first half, the game opened up and became a more even affair, but the score stood at the halftime whistle.
The Hawks pressed on in the second half and created great opportunities to add to the scoreline. In the 55th minute, center midfielder Watson Prather was able to collect a knocked down ball in the penalty area after a corner kick and smash an attempt on frame. The shot was parried away by Hammers netminder and onto the feet of a streaking Diaz who somehow sailed his rebound attempt over the crossbar from 6 yards with an open net. In the 65th minute, Sam Scales collected the ball on the right flank and sent a curler that seemed destined for goal but instead clanked off the inside of the Hammers right post and was then frantically cleared to safety. The Hawks building frustration gave the Hammers confidence that they could nab the equalizer and the Hawks defense was called upon to make several clearances of their own from balls being whipped into the penalty area as space opened up on the flanks for counters. Ernesto Marquez collected the ball at the top of the box in the 80th minute, danced left, and then unleashed a shot that clanked off the crossbar to keep both the Hawks frustrations and the Hammers resolve high. In the end, Dos Anjos strike proved the difference as the final whistle blew and the Hawks emerged victorious to defend their DC/VA Open Cup title. With the win, the Hawks have qualified for Regional play and will be AWAY to the Maryland Open Cup champions on Sunday April 7th in a Region I Quarterfinal single-elimination fixture. The Hawks will next take the field against the same opponent in DC/VA Amateur Cup quarterfinals Sunday, February 24th.
